FirstFourth Friday of the Season - May 25

The Greater Pitman Chamber of Commerce will host its first Uptown Pitman Fourth Friday of the season on May 25.

“I’ve been given the task by the chamber of heading up this year’s Fourth Friday events,” said Theresa LaMonaca, owner of Treasures on Broadway. “The chamber of commerce and the merchants are trying to develop Fourth Friday as a whole experience of shopping, dining and strolling in Pitman. We’re trying to make it more of a destination.”

LaMonaca said she and the other merchants are trying to diversify this year’s celebrations, making each one a “fun and festive” night.

“We want visitors to experience art, culture and entertainment and get a bite to eat so they’ll come back to Pitman again and again,” she said.

In the past, said LaMonaca, musical performances have been very centered in the park, but this year they’re trying to spread entertainment throughout the uptown district.

“We want visitors to enjoy Broadway,” she said. “Many of the merchants will offer sales and special promotions on those evenings, and some will offer refreshments. If Fourth Friday falls on the night of a theater event, that makes it even more attractive.”

For the May event, the celebration will include a stilt walker and the CatDaddy band. Future Fourth Fridays will feature a steel drum band, a jazz trio, DJ Lou Costello, car shows and more. Carriage rides will be available at each event.

“We’re trying to build up the art portion of these events, so we’re trying to get local artists to set up on Theatre Avenue,” said LaMonaca. “We’ve all agreed it’s better to get the arts and entertainment moving along Broadway to encourage people to stroll through town.”

The events will run from May to November, on the fourth Friday of each month, from 6 to 9 p.m.

“It’s about getting people out, having something fun for families to do and encouraging neighbors to meet neighbors,” she said. “We’d like to draw people from other towns in too, like Washington Township. With the economy as it is, people are always looking for free events, so why not see what Pitman has to offer?”

Fourth Fridays are rain or shine events.
