About Pitman…
Located 20 minutes southeast of Philadelphia and adjoining the Rowan College campus, Pitman rests along the northern edge of farmland and winery rich South Jersey. Begun in 1871 as a summer camp meeting for Methodists escaping the heat and bustle of Philadelphia and its immediate suburbs, the first structures were doll like summer homes built on a dozen small avenues radiating from a central auditorium. This area, known as Pitman Grove, remains today and is listed on the New Jersey and National Registers of Historic Places.
Pitman’s business district, adjacent to the Grove, is anchored by the historic vaudeville era Broadway Theatre. Constructed in 1920 and beautifully restored to it’s original splendor, the Theatre, which has hosted the likes of Bob Hope in a bygone era, now offers a full complement of musicals, children’s plays and nationally known musical acts.
Along the rest of the brick paved sidewalks strolling visitors will find fine dining, a variety of ethnic cuisine, homemade ice cream and baked goods, craft beer, live music, modern and hand finished home goods and assorted venues for art and craft all in a classic small town setting.
